What is Music Therapy?

At Spyria Therapy, our music therapy sessions are not about learning an instrument or performing a concert. Instead, our Registered Music Therapists (RMTs) use music as a clinical tool to achieve non-musical goals.

Music engages almost every area of the brain simultaneously. It provides a unique, non-invasive, and highly engaging pathway to reach clients who may struggle with traditional talk-based or purely physical therapies.

For Aged Care: Enhancing Quality of Life

  • Dementia & Cognitive Support

Music often remains accessible even when language fades. We use personalized music therapy to stimulate memory recall, reduce cognitive decline-related frustration, and provide comfort.

  • Managing Behavioral Symptoms

Our clinical interventions are proven to help manage "sundowning," agitation, and anxiety in residents with dementia, often serving as a powerful non-pharmacological support.

  • Combating Social Isolation

Group music-based activities foster social connection, encouraging residents to interact with peers and participate in meaningful community moments.

  • Emotional & Physical Wellbeing

Music therapy provides a sense of agency and joy, supporting residents' emotional health and physical rhythm, which can aid in mobility and pain management.

How Music Therapy Supports Our Clients

For Children & Adolescents: Building Foundations

  • Communication & Language

Using rhythmic cues and melodic intonation to encourage vocalization, syllable imitation, and sentence formation. For non-verbal children, music provides an alternative "language" to express needs and feelings.

  • Emotional Regulation

Harnessing tempo, volume, and rhythm to help children manage anxiety, reduce meltdowns, and learn how to transition between activities calmly.

  • Social & Interaction Skills

Through joint music-making and turn-taking games, children learn the foundation of social communication—eye contact, shared attention, and social reciprocity.

  • Motor Skills & Coordination

Using instruments (like drums or shakers) to improve fine motor control, bilateral coordination, and physical planning.

  • Cognitive Engagement

Using structured musical play to improve focus, memory, and auditory processing.

Our Clinical Process

Initial Assessment & Goal Setting

We conduct a thorough assessment to understand the individual's preferences and functional goals. For children, we collaborate with parents; for aged care, we consult with clinical leads and caregivers to ensure a person-centered approach.

Personalized Therapy Sessions

We provide tailored sessions in the environment that best supports the client—whether at home, in the classroom, or within a residential aged care facility.

Collaborative Review & Strategy Integration

Progress is monitored against measurable goals. We provide parents, educators, and care staff with actionable insights, ensuring the therapeutic benefits continue beyond our sessions.
